The stars have aligned for fans of the 1995 film comedy Clueless (in other words, everyone): Paul Rudd and Alicia Silverstone are headed to Broadway this fall in new plays opening just a block apart. Rudd, who played low-key college student Josh in Amy Heckerling's hit film, is set to begin previews at the Cort Theatre on September 13 in Craig Wright's Grace. Silverstone, who starred as Cher, Rudd's fashionista stepsister (and eventual love interest), has just signed on for David West Read's The Performers, which begins previews on October 23 at the Longacre Theatre.
“She’s a really good actress and a really sweet person, so I’m excited,” Rudd told Broadway.com, when asked about Silverstone. The pair has reunited sporadically since their legendary kiss (see video below) in the classic teen comedy, and Rudd made sure to catch Silverstone in her most recent Broadway endeavor, 2010's Time Stands Still. So, will Rudd and Silverstone rendezvous for a post-show meal? “Maybe I’ll call [Alicia] and we can meet at Bar Centrale,” Rudd said, citing a favorite hangout of Broadway stars.
Rudd’s Clueless character was a pseudointellectual who often blasted Cher's love of popular culture. Would Josh appreciate Rudd’s forthcoming turn in Grace as a devout Christian looking to open up a chain of Gospel motels? “Maybe he’d go, and not really get it,” Rudd mused. “But he’d talk about it for a long time!”
